Cast Iron Fusion Welding

The Art of restoring vintage or hard to replace cast iron castings.

Specializing in restoring hard to find or replace original cast iron castings. I use a Furnace Fusion Welding process where I pre-heat the casting red hot. Then, while it is at that temperature, I use an oxy-acetylene torch along with new bare cast iron rod and re-cast the damaged area. By using just cast iron to repair cracks, along with replacing broken or missing pieces, the part will look and act like a new part. I have over 43 years of experience repairing cast iron, and have traveled to many parts of the world repairing cast iron castings.

Following are examples of two 1946 Harley Davidson Knucklehead cylinder heads being restored.

This shows the crack prepped for welding.

This head has a cracked ear.

The head is pre-heated to approximately 1800 degrees where it was Fusion Welded using Oxy-Acetylene and bare cast iron rod.

This is after the Fusion Welding and shows the weld rough ground to conform to the original casting.

The head is all finished. Note how the color is exactly the same as the base material.

This head has a broken fin.

A new fin was fabricated from cast iron and put into position for welding.

This is the head after welding with the fin rough ground to conform to the original shape of the casting.

The fin is finish ground to conform to its original shape.
